Re: Magic tricks? Desolder IC's from MTX PCB?
For me it depends. If the old chip is toasted (dead) or a prime suspect, unless it’s a hard to get or expensive type, I cut the legs and desolder the individual legs. Otherwise it depends on how awkward it is. For large or awkward chips, I use hot air. I use an electric paint stripping ‘gun’, every ...

Re: Questions about the Memotech MTX that you were too afraid to ask...
Why did Memotech pin the composite out to monochrome on quite a few MTX machines? Apart from extra protection against stalking… A monochrome composite video signal can have a higher resolution compared to a colour composite video signal. That’s why the Acorn BBC B, Electron and BBC Master 128 machi...

Re: What's the best way to rejuvenate keyboard switches?
The keyboard switches are similar to those on an Acorn BBC / Master / Electron. Sometimes spraying switch cleaner into the mechanism (yes, easier said than done) helps if you exercise them as well. Short of that, yes, desoldering and partially dismantling them would be the next step. But do try repe...

That’s a strange date for bonfire night
Is there some local reason for this?
In my part of the world, we have the Somerset Illuminated Carnivals, but these start on November 5th and continue through to the 19th.
Anyway, November 5th or 6th are the better dates for me.

Re: Memofest 2022 possible ? Where ? When ?
The U.K. government has removed all COVID19 restrictions in England (health is devolved for elsewhere in the U.K. so the situation may be different in Scotland and Wales). And some other ‘retro’ computer events are starting to plan in person physical events. So yes, it is reasonable to think about a...

Re: Cassette Loading problems
The thing is, intermittent failures of chips are not very common. But intermittent problems with contacts or leads are fairly common. Is the CTC in a socket? If yes, have you removed it carefully (so as not to bend any pins when it finally becomes free from the socket), cleaned the pins, then carefu...

Re: Cassette Loading problems
It may be that the magnetic coating (particles) on the tape are becoming detached and then clogging up the tape head in the cassette deck.
Try cleaning the tape head with a tape cleaning fluid. Or if you can’t get that, use IPA.
