Hi
My name is Viv - I joined the forum in 2014, but have not been active for various reasons, mainly because I am rather unfamiliar how forums work. I was a Dentist for my primary career, and have always been interested in electronics & computers, but never getting 'below deck' i.e. don't know how to disassemble, write code etc. My first computer was the venerable ZX81 from Sinclair, followed swiftly by my MTX512. However, as we all do, as things moved on, I & Windows appeared I started to get into this arena. I built a desktop PC which initially ran Windows95 or some such early version (my memory is not what it used to be), but that now sits upstairs, runs Windows XP & is not connected to the internet. I subsequently built a tower PC, which is still my current PC for everyday use. (As you all know, one doesn't have to be a PC Wizard to build Windows PCs, n this 'plug & play scenario - hold my hands up as a 'dabbler')
The main reason I joined the forum was to try & find out how to load programs onto my MTX512, now none of my tape recorders have 3.5mm jack plug input/output sockets to connect to the MTX512

Hi Viv,

Welcome me to the Forum. I see that Martin has already pointed you to modern alternatives for loading programs into your MTX.

If you just wanted to quickly load a few games, you could also consider MAGROM ....

I'm finally a Memotech owner after drooling over the adverts back in the late 1980s and finally managing to acquire a working one with CF adapters off ebay. Now all I need is some more memory to take it over 64K.

Welcome.

If you've got a CFX already, then Andy Key has a memory card for the MTX, it won't increase the memory in basic past 64k though. (Not that there's any software out there that needs more than 64k visible to basic.)

Hello everybody.
I'm a 30 year old software developer, with passion for history from Slovenia. I did not own any original 8 bit in my childhood (my first computer was a 486 pc), but got into 8-bit micros while watching 8-bitGuy, Retro Man Cave and similar channels on Youtube. :) I currently own 2 C64, an Atari 600xl, a ZX Spectrum 48k and my newest acquisition MTX 512, oh an I also have a couple of Gameboys. :D

My MTX has some age related hiccups, but I'm confident that with your excellent expertise we can bring this glorious machine back to life! (I'll open a dedicated thread for debugging if that is ok)

I've also posted on the Facebook but was told that this is a better place for MTX discussions. :)
Have a nice day!

My name is Steve Trinder, and I am the chap who wrote the game "Fathoms Deep" back in about 1983. I had just the MTX500 (not the 512), and writing the program took about three months. It was the first game I ever wrote in Z80 assembler, which I followed with "Drive the Cee-5", if anyone remembers that. If there's any fans of Fathoms Deep out there, please do get in touch - I'd love to hear from you after so long!
Best Wishes to you all,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

Welcome to the forum!

I’ve not played Fathoms Deep much myself, but it gets a nice writeup on Jim’s site and I have it on my Memotech downloads page [url][http://www.primrosebank.net/computers/m ... dl.htm/url] from where you can see the link to Jim’s page. Cee5 is there too.

Do you still have your MTX?

Dave

Dear Dave,

Good to hear from you! Yes, I do still have the MTX. It's in the loft, no doubt full of dust and cobwebs. The power supply would probably have had it too. But one day I'll get it down. The kids will wonder how, by today's standards, something so big could only have 32K RAM!

Did someone (or you) say that there's a downloadable version of Fathoms Deep which will run on a PC? The children are desperate to see the game, I've told them all about the joys (and necessity) of Machine Code/Assembler programming in the 80s, and my middle lad has even been thumbing through my old Z80A programming manual. A cracking read, I'm sure.

Please let me know if there is a download I can show them, I would be forever grateful!

Best Wishes,

Steve Trinder.
