I've recently spotted several interesting Homebrew computers (nothing to do with me)

The write up for this claims it will be a self build kit.. but with so many surface mount components I think most self-builders won't have the tools to build it ? Plus one has to ask why would you go to such lengths to make a NEW ZX81 as the original was pretty inadequate even in it's day ! And to drastically 'Enhance' it would basically mean designing a Whole New Machine!

To that list you can add

ZX80 - Pretty much all of it is currently in production (except maybe the modulator ??)
ZX81 - Can be made from a ZX80 with a few extra parts.

Acorn Atom - The 6847 VDG would have to be NOS or a pull

All of course were available in kit form in the early days of the home computer.

I'd forgot the Sinclair QL.. I think some clones where made of this in the 90s using 6040 & 68060 CPUs .. but they never caught on ? There where clones of the original made in the 80s under licence but they sold in limited numbers or were designed for a specific purpose (Telecoms). All in all the Sinclair QL never reached it's expected potential !
