Hi

I use a voice memo program called "Voice Recorder" on my iphone at Max volume with the MTX but get about a 50% success rate. The program allows adding the WAV files via USB which can then be selected for playback.
Phones seem to have volume limiters these days to protect peoples hearing which means they do not produce a high enough signal or something like that. I've had no luck using a PC to play the WAV and the MTX to actually load.
Nassimbakir has made a WAV player for his MTX and provided lots of WAV files for Dave to add to his site.

As for new hardware I can't recommend the MFX enough. It's a fantastic piece of kit especially as you can then use ftp or http to upload files onto the MTX's drives. http://www.primrosebank.net/computers/m ... fx/mfx.htm

A couple of points:
  • At the Memotech Computer, you must use a mono 3.5mm plug. Most stereo plugs don't work as the contacts are not in the same position as a mono plug. However, see below.
  • These computers were designed to be used with the typical "shoe box" mono cassette recorders that were available in the 1980s. These were capable of outputting a very powerful signal on their "earphone" ("ear") socket. Most modern equipment doesn’t produce a powerful enough signal. So you may need to use an amplifier. E.g. the cheap old style powered PC speakers as long as they have an external speaker or output socket.
There is a hack that may work. I have not tried this, but it's worth a try. Your modern device must be battery powered. The source file must have both the left and the right stereo channels that are exactly the same. Now one of them (doesn’t matter which), must be inverted. If you now feed this stereo signal to the Memotech using a stereo 3.5mm plug, the Memotech should now see the difference between the two channels as a higher voltage than if only using a normal mono signal.

Although the bits and bytes were beeping in the wav file (checked it with in ear headphones) machine did not react. I also tried different runs with max volume or 50% volume but failed.

Any ideas what is wrong ?
I then changed from pc to a mobile phone and tried it from there. Same reaction. No reaction on the memotech.
I then tried 2 different cables, even tried to change the port, so i tried either MIC and EAR side. But still nothing.
From the manual it should have written a FOUND message when the game begins to load.

Is the soundcard part of the mainboard in the memotech somehow broken ??

I downloaded the game from this website. It was a *.rar file i had to decompress.

Is there another hardware i could attach to the memotech to load/save software ?
Maybe a more modern enhancement that emulates disk support ?
hi,
you can use your PC to play the .wav files provided by Dave's site. try the files that have my name beside first(they are digitally mastered - should work 100%)
Volume should range from 50 -75 on your PC-media player.
use mono ear cable - not stereo (originally comes with the Memotech).
let me know .

Ok. I now use the original cable and it found something
But then the error message SE.C
Is shown.

I tried to run continental chess.

Is it not ok to use LOAD „“

?

Maybe i need to use a different command ??

Or maybe the data was not read accurately because it says

FOUND: :HG: |)

So i will try with different equaliser settings.

I finally was successful. My iPad had enough sound output to feed the memotech.

Let's play chess!

Many thanks for helping me getting this running.

Well, you can actually! You can buy the MFX add-on board. It is sold for [ED:POA] ex shipping & handling. Please keep in mind that - since the UK is non EU nowadays! - you will be hit by a massive customs tax! In Holland I had to pay an extra €75 just to have it declared through customs. With the MFX you will get a 512k RAM, VGA output, LAN and an SD card slot to replace the diskdrive… A real nice piece of hardware worth every penny!
