I don't s'pose someone would like to lend an FDX to me?...

Post by stephen_usher »

I'm going to be taking my two MTXs along to the Centre for Computing History in Cambridge for the retro-festival at the beginning of November (4th/5th) with a theme of the MTX at 40.

It would be nice if an FDX unit could be on the table as part of the display, which doesn't need to be operational as I have the CFX and MFX for the two machines.

Does anyone have one I could borrow for the weekend? As I said, it doesn't need to be in working condition merely presentable.

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb :!:

I think there aren't enough FDXs in existence still.

Besides I'm not sure those who have them want to enable any re-enactments of the Weird Science "creation" scene!!

Yeah, I was worried about the hordes to be honest. Too many offers. ;-)

T'was Kelly Le'Brock...

There are a few around. I'll just have to ask on another list.

I know - anyway, I hope I didn't drive you away with my attempt at humour. Good luck in your quest.

The problem is probably the logistics. The FDX is heavy and bulky, any loan would likely require local collection. The cost of shipping would likely be high and it would be pretty difficult to get adequate insurance against loss or damage.

If you posted a rough area where you could collect from, that might help?

I was hoping for just a response... But Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire/Wilts/Northamptonshire area for collection or meet up in Cambridge before the event (4th/5th Nov.). I never expected anyone to ship an FDX, too likely to be damaged.

It would certainly be a good comparison FDX vs MFX. 1980s vs 2010s.

OK the Cyclone FPGA we used is a bit earlier than 2010, but the net chip is a closer to 2020.

If you were to get a rugby match arranged over the same weekend next door to the museum then I can think of someone with a rather large MTX collection who may be tempted in visiting south ;-)
