New member saying hello

Post by jonriglar »

Hi all,
Quick introduction as I signed up today.

I'm a collector of most 8 bit machines, and even some early 16 bit. Recently added a pristine MTX 512 to my collection only to find it doesn't work! The wonderful experience of Ebay - never mind, interesting project now to repair.

The MTX is a computer I've long wanted to add to my collection and it will get used regularly once repaired.

I have a strong interest in the whole 8 bit era having worked as a freelance journalist on some of the UK national computer magazines at the time.

For my sins I'm now an Operations Manager, working for a company that designs and manufactures medical products.

That's me!

Another MTX Fault - Jon Riglar's MTX

Post by Dave »

Hi Jonathan,

welcome to the group !

Good luck with the MTX repair, if you need any help, you've come to the right place to ask!

Can I complement you on your excellent choice of RAM chips that you have just bought :-)

Did you write anything on MTX back in the day?

regards
Dave

p.s., which ebay item was it that you bought?

Hi Dave

I'll get the serial number later and post it.

The unit is in excellent cosmetic order but it was obvious once open that it had some 'history' that was different from that described in the advert on EBAY.
Several of the VRAM chips had been replaced and all were running uncomfortably hot.
I've fitted new video RAM into sockets but this hasn't cured my problem; I've just ordered a new VDP to swap out. Voltages to the chips test ok and the output on screen is the same regardless of whether I use the source from modulator or video out. I currently have a 'coloured snow' on start up, no characters, etc.

I worked for quite a while for Sinclair User ('86-'90) and also Computer Gamesweek, ACE, C&VG, Zero & ST Update. Good times, but didn't really experience with the MTX until much later.

Regards
Jon
