There are speed settings if connectigs via UART, but the USB connetion has no settings at all, I guess it's supposed to identify via plug in and pray.

The various ID fields do appear in the device manager, but not in the programming utility.
Replying to myself!

The answer was to use a different PC, on that one everything worked first time, I now have a flashfloppy 3.37 equipped Gotek.

Excellent news.
Henceforth you are deemed to be the Goto Gotek God!

My next suggestion was going to be to try a diffetent USB socket (USB 2.0/3.1) yoseeif it was a speed thing.

I guess some USB controllers are not as compatible as others!
MTX500, MTX512, 3x Series 2, SDX single disk, FDX 2 disk, Andy's excellent ReMemorizer #7, VideoWall software on a laptop, 32k RAM exp (with some spare sockets empty), a bunch of spares to keep it all going, plus a boxed/working DMX80
